Here’s how to stop being angry…

As I was thinking upon the ways to stop myself from being angry at other people’s behaviour, I came upon this beautiful quote of Ibn ul Qayyim which literally made me speechless with its simplicity and accuracy… And I realized that if we pray to Allah for this gift then we can be free of our negative feelings for others…

قال ابن القيم رحمه الله تعالى :
‎فإن الله إذا أراد بعبد خيراً سلب رؤية أعماله الحسنة من قلبه، و الإخبار بها من لسانه، و شغله برؤية ذنبه

Ibn al Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Surely when Allah wants good for his slave…

He takes away from his heart the habit of looking at his good deeds…

And he takes away from his tongue the urge to inform others (of his deeds)…

And he makes him occupied with looking at his sins…

So basically the cure for negativity lies in not being curious and overly observant of what wrong others are doing…

But to be able to ignore and forgive other people’s imperfections, you need to be free of self righteousness…

And then this habit of constantly being so conscious of your goodness can be cured only when you stop telling others of how good you are and what good deeds you have accomplished…

So once you stop your heart and tongue from self praise, then your focus will start shifting towards your own mistakes… and the more you realize that your own sins are the only deadly thing from which you need to get rid of… then you will notice even the tiniest error and will rush towards seeking forgiveness from Allah…

And being humans we can never be free of sins so if we are busy in self protection from sins and self purification through constant istighfar… then our minds and hearts will find no time to criticize and be angry at anyone else…

Surely such a mind shift would be a priceless gift from Allah… and I pray that he grants us the tawfeeq to do so… ameen
