life can be so beautiful, if…

To cure a disease the first thing we need to do is to recognize that there is a disease to begin with… for this we need to be alert about the symptoms and then the next step is to identify the triggers which cause the reactions… and once we determine these causes then all we have to do is to eliminate them…

Just like wheat triggers the destruction of the intestines of someone who suffers from celiac disease… and so wheat is absolutely eliminated from the diet forever… similarly we need to identify and eliminate the triggers that make us unable to attain the true benefit of Islam despite practicing all the rituals…

My last article was a sort of diagnosis on this “disease” and from the saying of Ibnul Qayyim (R.A) we came to know that if we have these destructive habits then our deeds cannot touch our hearts and our hearts remain detached from Allah… these triggers are:

  • Pride

  • Self praise

  • Debating to prove oneself right

  • Showing off good deeds

  • Forgetting the favours (of Allah and of people)

So how are we going to get rid of these barriers?

For this, first of all we need to realize that every act that we do for Allah…whether it is the five prayers… reciting Quran…giving sadaqah… helping others… doing zikr… these acts are not the end in itself, rather they are a means to self-purification and getting the closeness to Allah…

So if we continue to do good deeds but not remove the barriers between our deeds and our hearts and between our hearts and Allah then all our efforts are being lost… just like the example of the running water and the wiper… on one hand someone is busy wiping the floor and on the other end the tap is left open… in order to dry the floor you have to turn off the tap…

Even though it seems silly to imagine if someone can be so foolish to do this… but isn’t this exactly what we do…?

We keep on praying and doing good deeds to cleanse our hearts but side by side we keep bringing in the trash of negative thinking that results in backbiting… or sarcasm… because when you are filled with pride and self praise then it will definitely come out in hurting others…

Looking down on others will lead you to letting them down with words and actions… so you will be constantly engaged in a battle where you want to be proved better than others…

So you will be so ready to find flaws and will forget all the good that they have done to you…

And once you are ungrateful and unappreciative of people then you will also be ungrateful to Allah because it will become a habit to always keep pointing out the difficulties of life instead of focusing on how much Allah is blessing you constantly…

We have to admit that it is a most common disease and each one of us is involved in it one way or the other… But the mercy of Allah is that he teaches us through people who have died hundreds of years ago but through their sincerity and hard work they left behind them these gems of wisdom that make us think and improve ourselves…

So lets decide to stop fighting people and start fighting instead with these enemies of our faith…

Lets say good bye to pride and self praise and replace it with looking at the greatness of Allah and speaking about his magnificence…

Focus on winning the hearts of people instead of winning the debate… lets listen and understand the opinions of others… be gentle… be kind…

When you wish to show off and get appreciation for your goodness… remember your sins and ask Allah for forgiveness… remember how many shortcomings you have and Allah has not exposed them… so thank him and remain humble…

And lastly remember the favours that Allah has done to you… and is continuing to do so despite all that we do or not do in return… and also remember what other people have done for you… praise them for it and praise Allah for giving you these people in your life… if you realize how important they have been in your life then you will find an openness in your heart and life will become so much more beautiful…

All these are just a few things that came to my mind but I am sure if we decide to give our hearts a chance to feel the sweetness of Allah’s love then we will be ready to give up all that is standing in the way… in sha Allah…
