double standards…

These days there is a lot of talk about “rights”… human rights… minority rights… women’s rights… you name it… And so we have become a society in which all the time we are stressed about “getting” our rights, while no one bothers to think about giving rights… so much so that even when we are performing any duty in any capacity we never evaluate whether we have fulfilled the rights of that job…? Have we given in full for which we want to be paid in full?

This is the attitude which Allah has depicted in His Book… in chapter 83…

“Woe to the defrauders…Who, when they take the measure (of their dues) from men take it fully, But when they measure out to others or weigh out for them, they are deficient.”
But what can be the root cause for this disease of double standards? Obviously it is a result of extreme selfishness where all that matters to you is the fulfillment of your own interest… and this again is a result of not giving any thought to the hereafter…not caring about the ultimate accountability in front of Allah…

Because if you really believe that all your dealings are going to be measured and Allah will make you pay for every injustice you did to others then how can anyone dare to be so casual about cheating and depriving those whom he considers weak and defenseless…

As I was reflecting upon this surah it made me think that the real message from Allah is for us to stop thinking and criticizing of what others are doing to us… because they will have to face the consequences whether good or bad… But my concern should be my own deeds…

So in whatever capacity Allah has placed me, I should see whether I am giving the rights of others in full measure or not… because I am not answerable to people but to Allah himself…
