Pride and Prejudice…

The biggest test of our lives is that everything around us is just an illusion… but since we have very little exposure to the truth depicted in the Quran… so the illusions of this world have taken hold of our hearts… so much that even when we finally do open the book of Allah, and read the warnings in Allah’s own words, still our hearts are not moved… because when the fiction becomes reality for us then facts will appear as imaginary… when we get so used to hearing lies and false claims all over the media… then  the events which Allah is warning us about, don’t quite look as if they are ever going to happen… Although most of us won’t go so far as to actually admit that we don’t have any belief in the unseen but the way we listen (or not listen) to the warnings about the day of judgement that is going to come so soon… makes it so much obvious that there is very little faith in what’s about to happen… either we don’t believe or we don’t care… because if someone tells you that your house is going to be crushed to pieces… you won’t just shrug your shoulders and go to sleep… the thought that the roof might collapse anytime will be enough to keep you awake and alert…

But when Allah tells us that this whole universe is going to collapse… then it doesn’t create even a ripple in our routine…

Just reading the last juz of Quran and reflecting upon it since the start of Ramadan has made me realize once again that we are literally drowning in illusions and false hopes about our success… while Allah is sending ayah upon ayah… surah upon surah… to warn us of the terrifying end which is coming so near.

Allah has not hidden any fact from us but our test is that it can be seen only with the eyes of the heart… and the eyes of the heart will see only when we really have a sincere desire to see…

But if someone doesn’t want to face the reality then nothing will become clear… and for such people islam will continue to remain a mystery… and so they will keep debating what is right and what is not… because instead of taking Allah as their master… they have made their own intellect their judge…

So listen to the question which Allah is asking us:

“O mankind! What has deceived you about your Rabb… the most gracious?” (82:6)

Our deception about Allah is that we have started believing very conveniently that whatever we do is okay with Allah… because he is so merciful so he will not punish us… so we can just live the way we want to live and be at peace that everything we do is fine…

This concept is common in those who have not bothered to study Quran… but the sad thing is that even those who like to be called the carriers of Quran have started taking Allah’s mercy for granted… since they think that they are serving the book of Allah so now they have become so special in the eyes of Allah that they are beyond punishment… this casual attitude makes them careless in their speech and behavior… and they fail to realize that even a grain of pride can take them away from success…

So whether this pride is due to your high intellect… or it is because of your high standard of worship… or your serving the cause of Allah… it is equally dangerous… and it can be removed only when we realize the truth that Allah is our Master and we are only His slaves…

May Allah save us from all deceptions and make us the true believers who remain in awe of Allah… like a slave should fear his master… ameen

    • Dear Sister Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu
I am so glad you wrote to me and it gives me such a great feeling that in this world of materialism there are still people like you who think and worry about their religion and their hereafter…
Your question is a bit difficult in the sense that the sahaba were people with a very special mission and in those times I dont think there were any universities where people would spend their lives in studying sciences… but instead those great people used to learn everything from their environment and they were highly intelligent and could take lessons from everything that they observed… secondly the revelation from Allah in the form of Quran also gave them great lessons about life and science and history and everything…
So we can say that learning these subjects is not a bad thing but there should be a balance between how much time you give to these subjects and how much time you have dedicated to learning the book of Allah… because after all this is the most primary and the most important subject that we should learn because our whole life is based on it… after this we should certainly learn about our world so that we can give benefit to others etc… every beneficial knowledge is good but we should not get so lost in it that we dont get time to learn Quran.
this is my humble opinion… maybe some good scholar can give you a better answer:)
May Allah help you in achieveing your desire to become a good muslim… ameen
