I need water… do you?

Some people ask why there is never an end to the study of Quran? May be they believe it is some kind of escape for women to leave their household chores and go sit somewhere listening to the same Quran which they heard last Ramadan… whether in some circle of knowledge or in taraweeh… I even heard someone say that when you ask for guidance and Allah taught you the Quran then why is there a need to go again and again to attend lectures etc?

But the fact is that Quran is not a newspaper… that once you read it then you don’t have any need of it… Its not an ordinary book that you read and then put away on the shelf… Rather it is your communication with your Creator… a living dialogue between your thoughts and Allah’s words which come in direct response to whatever you are feeling or going through…

That is why Allah often describes the revelation of Quran as rain that falls from the sky… so we have a relationship with this book like we have a relationship with water… You cannot say that you had a glass of water yesterday so you don’t need it today…!!  Every few hour your body will demand water because you cannot survive without it…

Similarly our hearts have this inbuilt need for getting guidance from Allah… and so every few hours we stand in salah and ask Him in the words of Quran… Ya Allah show me the straight path…

But who will ask for directions? Someone who is seriously committed to reach his destination… someone who knows he cannot reach there without Allah’s help and guidance… someone who wants to save himself from getting lost…

Imagine someone in a desert… lost and confused… there are no landmarks… no one else to tell him the way… so he goes round and round in circles… his water is running out and so are his chances of survival… if he had a choice what would he treasure more: a bottle of water… or someone to guide him to his house?

We live in this world in which the distractions are like the mounds of sand in a desert… forever shifting with the wind and making us go round and round in circles… so much so that a majority of us have even lost the sense that they are lost…

So the first step towards having a relationship with Allah and his Book is to recognize that we don’t know anything unless Allah teaches us about it…

Secondly we should have complete faith that this book is beyond doubts… a most clear truth

Thirdly we need to come to it with the attitude of humility and acceptance…

Because Allah will definitely guide those who want guidance… and will leave those who think that they don’t need to know because in their false self-image they are already so knowledgeable…

May Allah save us all from all deceptions… ameen
