how to discipline yourself

There are different phases which we go through… a phase of ignorance and heedlessness about Allah and the hereafter in which we are not even aware of our lack of knowledge…

And then Allah blesses us that we start recognizing our state of ignorance and so we start moving towards knowledge and enlightenment… we learn the Quran and the path to success becomes clearly visible… it seems like our problems are all over now and we just have to follow this path to become successful… but then the real problem hits us and that is the realization that there is a wide gap between knowing the direction and following it.

Suddenly it becomes clear to us that simply knowing the way to paradise is not enough unless we walk on that way… not for a day or too when we are highly motivated… rather it is a journey that must be taken continuously… with determination and discipline… But we are so much addicted to our casual attitude of relaxation and entertainment (which we develop during our ignorant years) that we are not able to keep up with our intentions. We make plans and we break them… we make goals and then forget them… and so the question which keeps coming back to us again and again is how do we stay consistent? How do we travel like the car which keeps going and doesn’t stop every other mile…? Imagine how long and tedious would be the journey on such a car which stops again and again?

The answer is only in one word and that is “DISCIPLINE”…

Once you define your goal and adjust your speed then all you need is to keep going. And for that we need energy…. and energy is lost in many ways which we don’t realize. It is lost in talking unnecessarily… it is lost in anger… in resentments and grudges about other people… it is lost in doing sins like backbiting and ridiculing others… it is lost in idle forms of entertainment…

But most of all when we waste time at night… and deprive ourselves of sleep… that is the time when we lose most of our energy…

we sleep late and so we are unable to wake up early… This is a two edged sword which the shaitan uses to make us lose our physical as well as spiritual health. So when you hear the call for isha think of it as a turning point of your life… a point where you can DECIDE where you want to land up… its a choice between the pain of discipline and the pain of loss of energy and motivation. And also remember that giving in to desires is like riding a roller coaster… once you get in the seat then you cannot stop in midway…

Therefore all those who want to be successful and walk on the way to Jannah with energy, enthusiasm and determination will have to DISCIPLINE themselves… at night… Put off your phones and other gadgets and pray Isha. Then just make duas and go to sleep.

Sleep early and wake up early and you will see how your energy level will go up and you will start finding pleasure in pleasing Allah instead of pleasing your self…
