These are the times when materialism seems to be the nucleus of our lives… making money, spending money, hoarding stuff beyond ones needs, making a display of your wealth… judging people by their financial status… etc etc
But the real truth is that if we run after money and other worldly stuff at the cost of forgetting Allah and the Hereafter then those very blessings which we collect become a source of our punishment… but how could blessings be a punishment?
One form of punishment comes in the form of fear that these blessings will be taken away… so much that the person always remains in the fear that someone will steal his belongings or someone might cause harm to these things… or that by the natural laws of aging these things will become old and decrease in value. This constant fear and anxiety will make it impossible for him to enjoy these blessings.
Secondly there will always be those who will have more and better stuff than we have… so a materialistic person will be consumed with envy and dissatisfaction
Thirdly and finally when the moment of reality hits a person either near or at the time of death… that all he collected will be left behind… and there is nothing to look forward to because he never cared for the hereafter and so didn’t collect anything for it… this will really be the final blow of disappointment and regret.
So why don’t we wake up to reality now when we have the time to set our priorities according to the truth revealed by Allah…
[57:20] Know that this world’s life is only sport and play and gaiety and boasting among yourselves, and a vying in the multiplication of wealth and children, like the rain, whose causing the vegetation to grow, pleases the husbandmen, then it withers away so that you will see it become yellow, then it becomes dried up and broken down; and in the hereafter is a severe chastisement and (also) forgiveness from Allah and (His) pleasure; and this world’s life is naught but means of deception.
[ 57:21] Hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and to a garden the extensiveness of which is as the extensiveness of the heaven and the earth; it is prepared for those who believe in Allah and His messengers; that is the grace of Allah: He gives it to whom He pleases, and Allah is the Lord of mighty grace.
