Danger and safety

All situations in this life are a test… whether we are facing any turmoil or we are at peace in our smooth routine lives. But it is human nature that we judge things by their appearance and so when things are rough and shatter our peace then we think we are being tested and we feel scared of loss or damage of some kind or the other. And we start calling Allah with all our heart because we suddenly remember that only He can save us…

On the other hand when things are apparently calm and peaceful then we assume ourselves to be safe… and so we forget Allah or at least we stop fearing Him… because of this illusion that if we are having a good time then He must be pleased with us.

But when we read the Quran we understand that in reality all the situations are equal… because the possibility of loss and damage is present in even the most “safe” times and places.

I was reminded of this reality this morning when I was reading the Quran and these words from Surah Al-Araaf seemed to bring me to my senses…

أَفَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ الْقُرَىٰ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ بَأْسُنَا بَيَاتًا وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ {97}

 What! Do the people of the towns then feel secure from our punishment coming to them by night while they sleep?

أَوَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ الْقُرَىٰ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ بَأْسُنَا ضُحًى وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ {98}

 What! Do the people of the towns feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they play?

أَفَأَمِنُوا مَكْرَ اللَّهِ ۚ فَلَا يَأْمَنُ مَكْرَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ {99}

What! do they then feel secure from Allah’s plan? But none feels secure from Allah’s plan except the people who shall perish.

The benefit of pondering on the above ayaat is that they make us come out of our heedlessness… they make us alert to Allah’s possible anger and punishment…

And if we can really focus beyond the appearances then it will give us the right balance in life… because then our focus will not be on the circumstances but on Allah. If we are following His commands then we will not be overwhelmed by the worldly fears even if the outward conditions become rough and dangerous…

On the other hand we will not be heedless of Allah even while enjoying the most peaceful moments… we will remain alert and careful not to forget Him if we understand that good times are as much of a test as the bad times…

The real test is to remember and obey Him at all times. May Allah help us all to pass this test… ameen
