How the shaitan misleads us… (part-3)

We all want to avoid doing things which might cause regret, shame, embarrassment or any kind of loss in life… but we don’t realize that this is exactly what our enemy, the Shaitan, wants for us and this is the end towards which he is planning and working day and night… But we are not actively involved in fighting against him because of two reasons:

1- Some people think that it is inconceivable that the shaitan can have control over their actions because they do things according to our own decisions and so all this talk about the shaitan is just a myth.

2- Some others think that since the shaitan is so active and powerful so they are helpless against him… and they assume that they will not be blamed for their sins because it was the shaitan’s action and not theirs…

But we forget that Allah has not left us to wander in this world upon our own assumptions and speculations… Rather each and every act of shaitan has been made specifically clear in the Quran and Hadith, so that we can defend ourselves accordingly.

The shaitan cannot control what we do… but he can inject his ideas in our heart… whether we decide to follow his invitation or not, is our own choice… and it is due to this choice that we will be held responsible on the day of judgement…

And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, “Indeed, Allah had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. (Ibrahim:22)

But how can we recognize that a thought or idea is not our own but from the devil? This needs constant evaluation and consciousness… but even before that we need to know the tactics which shaitan uses against us…

1- Calling people towards shirk and disbelief…

like the example of Satan when he says to man, “Disbelieve.” But when he disbelieves, he says, “Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allah , Lord of the worlds.”(Al-Hashr: 16)

But really how is it possible for someone to invite a believer towards disbelief… and be successful in it?

The fact is that Shaitan does not do it abruptly… rather he uses his strategies step by step.

At first he will simply lead a person from doing the best deeds towards less important things… and if we are not careful then we can easily fall into this trap. For example at the time of Prayer the best thing is to pray… but he might put an idea that maybe if I clean the room first then I can pray more nicely… now cleaning the room is also a good thing but definitely not the best thing at that moment… however most people are tricked into it and once they start cleaning the room then they might feel hot and so they think that maybe they should take a shower first and then after that they might want to relax a bit with a cup of tea because all that exertion has made them deserving of a break… and then the phone starts ringing and they attend the call… and of course if someone starts telling them their problem then listening to them is also a good deed and so on… but amid all these good deeds the best deed which should have been done at once… the salah… is missed or become very late, hurried and distracted…

Now if this thing becomes a frequent matter that you are always being distracted away from the important matters of your life and getting oh-so-busy in unimportant, irrelevant stuff then it is a sign of danger because the shaitan will not stop here but move on to the next step… and that is to beautify the small sins… making it seem so harmless, innocent and easy to fall into…

Like the phone which you attended… now in between good counselling you might start gossiping/ backbiting etc… even if some alarm bells ring in your heart, the shaitan will make it look so small that you will not feel guilty. One after the other you will find yourself making fun of people, or looking down on them, or talking against them… or other such seemingly small sins…

Once someone gets into this habit of sinning on a routine basis… then it will be easy for shaitan to drag him towards bigger and bigger sins… until one gets closer and closer to shirk and eventually disbelief…

2- Putting doubts about the foundations of religion.

Abu Huraira (r.a.) reported that the Prophet (s.a.w) said:

“The shaitan comes to one of you and says: who created this? Who created that? Until he says: who created your Lord? So when he reaches this point then he should seek protection of Allah and stop it.”

Therefore the solution of these doubts is to seek Allah’s protection and not to let yourself follow this line of thought.

3- Stops from Allah’s Obedience.

Jabir Ibn Abdullah (r.a.) narrates that the Prophet (s.a.w) said:

Indeed the shaitan sits in the way of Adam when he wants to accept Islam he will say to him: are you becoming a muslim and giving up the religion of your fathers? So if he disobeys shaitan and accepts islam then shaitan will sit in his way of Hijrah and say: are you going to migrate and leave your earth and sky? So he disobeys shaitan and does Hijrah so shaitan comes and sits in the path of Jihad and says: are you going to do jihad and that is such a struggle with your self and your wealth and you will eventually be killed and your wife will re-marry and your wealth will be distributed… so he disobeys shaitan and does jihad… and whoever does this (i.e. keeps fighting the devil) then it is a right over Allah that he will enter him into Jannah… and whoever gets killed then it is definite that Allah will enter him into Jannah… and if he gets drowned then it is Haqq upon Allah that he will enter him into Jannah and if he gets his neck broken while falling off his mount then it is Haqq upon Allah that He will enter him into Jannah….

Although a long Hadith to read but really if you focus on its words and visualize how at each step of the way the shaitan wants to deviate us away from doing the things which take us in Jannah, you will realize what is stopping you from achieving the maximum benefit from your life… why you keep pausing at every step of the way? Why do these so called “mental blocks” keep popping up on the way to success?

Sometimes we think maybe our faith is not strong… sometimes we blame our company… sometimes we get so depressed that we don’t have the abilities or talents to do something good for Allah… but really at the back of all these doubts… is the same old enemy… the shaitan… As Allah tells us in the Quran:

[Satan] said, “Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.
Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].” (al-A’raaf:16,17)

Now the shaitan is not content with just the tactics described above rather he has many more methods which he employs against us…

so stay tuned for the next episode in which I shall describe those… In-sha-Allah
