I remember a story I read a few years ago about a man who gets separated and lost from his team members on a mountain climbing expedition. On the snow covered cliffs he tries to find his way back to the base camp but night falls and in the darkness he misses his step and falls down… fortunately he grabs hold of a ledge or the branch of a tree and suspended in mid air he calls out at the top of his voice:
“O God help me!!”
He hears a voice in the cold dark night: “Do you really believe I can help you?”
“Of course I believe!!!” the man cries out.
“Will you then do as I say?” the voice asks.
“Yes, anything… just get me out of this”… pleads the poor man hanging on for life.
“Ok then… just let go of the branch!” came the command.
“What?” cried the man, “I am asking you to save me and you are telling me to let go of the only support I have? What kind of help is this?”
“Ok then do as you wish… but you can be saved only if you let go…”
The next morning the rescue team reaches there only to find the man dead and frozen hanging on to a branch, two feet from the ground…
Although it is not a true story but if you look closely it is not so “un-true” either. So many people out there are suffering from problems which have taken the form of an unending torment. It’s not that they are not trying to solve these problems but the fact is that with every day the problem seems to get worse, not better… and yet we are seeking Allah’s help and calling to Him day and night. Why then do the problems don’t go away? Because we are not doing the one thing which is required of us… and that is to let go of Allah’s disobedience…
If we say that we believe in Allah then we should have faith that whatever He commands us to do is in our own interest. But what a stubborn attitude we have that we spend our whole lives holding on to our habits and keep making excuses for not entering Islam completely…
Exactly like the guy in the above story we keep on holding on to our “branch”… our false support… which gives us a false sense of security… while the reality is that we can be saved from being frozen to death only by letting go and landing safely on the ground which is just two feet away.
This branch can be a false belief… a false practise… a sin… an unlawful desire… a bad habit or just a prejudice which we keep on clinging to… thinking that we are safe as long as we hold on to it but in fact our problems cannot go away unless we really let go of these false beliefs and trust Allah that He is the only one who can save us.
So let go and be safe…
